Cape Charles, Va. — A Virginia children’s author will combine storytelling with outdoor education next week when she leads a summer garden club for elementary school students.
Gail Scott, who has written and illustrated children’s books including “Maggie and the Monarchs,” will host the event Aug. 7 from 5 to 6:15 p.m. at New Roots Youth Garden. The program is designed for children ages 5 to 13.
The session will blend Scott’s whimsical storytelling approach with hands-on gardening activities, organizers said. Scott, described as both a local children’s author and whimsical artist, is expected to share her book about monarch butterflies and gardening themes.
New Roots Youth Garden, which sponsors the event, encourages participants to wear closed-toe shoes and apply sunscreen. The outdoor program will proceed weather permitting.

Parents can register their children by scanning a QR code on promotional materials or by contacting the organization at goelkn@aol.com or 703-282-4405.
The summer garden club represents part of New Roots Youth Garden’s ongoing efforts to engage young people in environmental education and outdoor learning experiences.
Scott’s book “Maybelle and the Monarchs” features illustrated stories about butterfly conservation, reflecting themes that align with the garden organization’s mission to connect children with nature and sustainable practices.

We will miss him very much.
He will be deeply missed.
