CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Town of Cape Charles responded to six specific concerns submitted through its Citizen’s Report-a-Concern system this week, addressing a range of issues from public safety to free speech.
According to Town Manager updates, all concerns submitted were immediately acknowledged and directed to the appropriate department for evaluation and resolution based on urgency and priority.
One concern involved a low-hanging electric wire in the driveway of a property on the 600 block of Tazewell Avenue. A work order was issued to Public Works, and the issue was promptly resolved.
Another concern cited an offensive window display at a business on the 200 block of Mason Avenue, with a resident claiming the signage degraded the town’s character. Town officials confirmed the matter had been reviewed by the Town Attorney, who concluded that the signs are protected speech under the First Amendment. The Town is continuing to monitor the issue.
In Central Park, residents reported inadequate lighting in areas near the playground, vendor space, and Madison Avenue exit. Public Works responded to a work order, and the town reported that all lights are now functioning properly.
A misleading public parking sign suggesting the presence of additional parking where none existed was also removed following a submitted concern and subsequent work order.
Beachgoers leaving personal items such as tents and chairs overnight at the public beach raised another concern. Town officials reminded residents that signage is posted at beach entrances warning that unattended items may be treated as abandoned property. Public Works is tasked with assessing and removing such items during early morning maintenance.
Lastly, a complaint regarding a locked public restroom at the beach around 6:20 a.m. resulted in another work order being sent to Public Works for review and correction.
