Music lovers across Virginia’s Eastern Shore will have two opportunities in early June to experience a program of thought-provoking and emotionally powerful classical music as the Orchestra of the Eastern Shore presents “Unfinished Business.”
Under the direction of Music Director Amanda Gates, the community orchestra will perform the program at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, at Market Street Methodist Church in Onancock, and again at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at Hungars Episcopal Church in Bridgetown.
The concert will feature three celebrated works from the classical repertoire, each exploring themes of mystery, reflection, and unfinished journeys.
The program opens with Charles Ives’ “The Unanswered Question,” one of the most distinctive works in American classical music. The piece is known for its philosophical exploration of existence, with musical lines representing an unanswered question posed against a backdrop of serenity and contemplation.
The orchestra will also perform Carl Stamitz’s “Concerto for Viola and Orchestra,” featuring acclaimed violist Celia Daggy as guest soloist. The concerto is considered one of the most important works in the viola repertoire and showcases the instrument’s expressive range and lyrical beauty.
Concluding the program will be Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, commonly known as the “Unfinished Symphony.” One of classical music’s most enduring mysteries, the symphony was left incomplete by Schubert but remains one of his most beloved and frequently performed works.
Admission to both concerts is free, although donations are welcome to support the orchestra’s mission of bringing high-quality live classical music to the Eastern Shore community.
The Orchestra of the Eastern Shore continues to provide opportunities for local audiences to experience orchestral performances close to home while highlighting the talents of regional musicians and guest artists.
For residents and visitors alike, “Unfinished Business” promises an evening of inspiring music that explores some of classical music’s most intriguing and enduring questions.
