SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) — The Chesapeake Bay watershed got a much-needed, $90 million shot in the arm Friday morning as EPA Deputy Director David Fotouhi and Rep. Jen Kiggans announced the grant money would go toward 83 new projects to support long-term water-quality improvements and critical restoration for the Bay.
“It’s really fantastic to be here in the Commonwealth, to be here in the Tidewater to really celebrate and see the opportunities that a healthy Chesapeake Bay has to offer,” Fotouhi said during a visit to Smithfield. “The Bay is more than just a body of water. It’s a way of life. It’s an economic engine for over 1,800 communities that line the Bay and who call its shorelines home.”
Kiggans said it is important to take care of the Bay and the beach, and called it “a special passion project of mine.”
“We all live on it, we all work on it, we all play on it,” Kiggans said. “It’s a really important part of what makes the Commonwealth of Virginia special. It’s also a very bipartisan issue, which I also appreciate.”
