The Academy for Lifetime Learning is offering introductory AI sessions at Eastern Shore Community College this fall, including attention to scams and misinformation. The following letter is written and submitted by Gleb Tsipursky, PhD. He proposes a complementary community exercise: train residents to question apparently credible answers, verify claims with trusted records, and resist pressure to act on a synthetic voice or message. The October 13 national survey suggests the audience for this practical guidance is substantial. The approach fits the Eastern Shore’s growing interest in using AI while preserving individual judgment and local trust.

EASTERN SHORE AI CLASSES SHOULD TEACH WHEN TO SAY STOP
The Academy for Lifetime Learning’s fall offerings at Eastern Shore Community College include beginner-friendly AI classes. One course explicitly addresses scams, fake voices, and misinformation. That could be among the most valuable things residents learn.
A national survey released October 13 by Elon’s Imagining the Digital Future Center found that 52% of workers would welcome guidance about AI’s limitations and when human judgment should take priority.
The same principle matters outside paid work. Have learners test an AI-generated explanation against an official local document. Show how a voice that sounds like a relative can be faked. Practice declining an urgent request for money until the person can be reached through a known phone number. Ask participants to identify what evidence would change their minds.
Eastern Shore libraries, community groups, and businesses could reinforce these habits with short public demonstrations and printable verification checklists.
Successful AI literacy means being able to use the technology and being comfortable refusing its advice when the facts do not support it.
