
Overview: Confidence increasing for a Significant Winter Storm Saturday across Central VA, Tidewater, Hampton Roads and Northeast NC. Some uncertainty remains in exact snow totals north and west of Richmond where amounts could be lower than the current forecast.
Period of greatest impact: Early Saturday morning through the entire day.
Snow will overspread the region this afternoon, increasing in intensity by 4 pm.
Temperatures will be in the upper 20s to around 30 allowing snow to quickly accumulate making for dangerous travel during the mid to late afternoon hours.
Once snow begins expect a period of snow, heavy at times, lasting several hours through the evening hours.
Temperatures: In the 20s will support accumulating snow.
Timing (Onset of accumulation): Snow flurries and some light snow could begin earlier than projected on the timing map. Snowfall rates will increase after midnight resulting in quick accumulations.
Snow will quickly accumulate making for dangerous travel late Friday night and Saturday.
Impacts: Snow Saturday will be heavy at times across portions of southeast VA and northeast NC. Heavy snow and gusty winds along the coast may result in some power outages and near-blizzard conditions Saturday in areas of heaviest snow. Expect rapid accumulations of snow Saturday morning. Due to bitterly cold temperatures, expect prolonged hazardous travel conditions into Sunday and Monday.
