Across the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia, industrial poultry operations are expanding at unprecedented rates, housing millions of birds in confined enclosures on small parcels of land with no regard for the negative impacts on surrounding communities. Since 2014, more than 400 poultry houses have been permitted or are in the approval pipeline — the majority in Accomack County. The local situation is primed for an environmental, economic and public health crisis.
Across the nation, factory farms damage air quality, water safety and public health for rural residents — and they raise a very real and troubling question that calls for a science-based answer: How will industrial poultry operations safely handle & dispose of the massive amounts of animal waste produced at these facilities?
“Manure to energy” technology is being touted by the industry as a win-win solution to the factory farm pollution problem — a silver bullet process that incinerates industrial-scale amounts of animal waste and creates energy. You’ve heard the myths. Now find out about the facts.
