Cape Charles Capital Projects Advance as Town Focuses on Infrastructure, Public Spaces

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Cape Charles is making progress on several key infrastructure projects, including ongoing renovations to the historic library building and the completion of a long-planned sidewalk infill project, according to a recent Capital Projects report.

Renovation work continued on the third floor and rear mezzanine of the library, part of a broader effort to preserve and enhance one of the town’s landmark buildings.

On the east side of Fig Street, crews completed a new sidewalk adjacent to the New Roots Youth Garden, marking the final segment of the sidewalk infill projects funded for the 2025 fiscal year.

The town also received the final reimbursement for the Inner Harbor Bulkhead Rehabilitation, Phase 3, from the Virginia Port Authority’s Aid to Local Ports grant program. The project is a critical component of the town’s waterfront infrastructure, ensuring long-term stability and support for local marine activities.

Additionally, the town provided photographs of the recently completed Phase 3 of the Community Trail along South Peach Street to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Hampton Roads District. The images will be used in VDOT’s annual Locally Administered Projects workshop, highlighting Cape Charles’ commitment to expanding pedestrian and bicycle access.

In a related effort, the town is working with the owners of 11 Peach Street to explore build-out and lease options for a new Visitors Center and public restrooms, potentially enhancing services for the growing number of tourists visiting the Eastern Shore.

Meanwhile, town officials are coordinating with the Harbor Master and the Cape Charles Yacht Club to address maintenance issues at the Watermen’s Memorial. Long-term plans include reconstituting the memorial’s nonprofit board of directors to guide future improvements and preserve the site’s historical significance.
