Due to not having a quorum, the December 19th Regular Meeting of the Cape Charles Historic District Review Board was moved to January 3rd. The board evaluated several Certificate of Appropriateness Applications, approving various modifications.
Approved Applications:
- 215 Mason Avenue:
- Proposed changes: Remove horizontal plywood from the top half of the commercial building, replace with Hardie Scalloped Siding, replace wood trim with AZEK, cover some existing exposed masonry with Hardie Scalloped Siding, repaint masonry, and replace awning and sign.
- Decision: APPROVED
- 619 Mason Avenue:
- Proposed changes: Replace existing shingle roof, add gutters and downspouts, doors; rebuild existing windows, porches; repair wood siding; and substantially reconstruct the existing masonry on the single-family home.
- Decision: APPROVED
- 645 Mason Avenue:
- Proposed changes: Relocate the existing two-story single-family dwelling and accessory structure to 602 Washington Avenue.
- Decision: APPROVED
- 603 Pine Street:
- Proposed changes: Replace one side window with two new windows; new portico roof over the side door; new eyebrow roof over new two French style garage doors; and replace cement siding as needed on the single-family home.
- Decision: APPROVED with the condition that the roof over the garage doors is built as pictured in examples submitted in the application.
- 110 Tazewell Avenue:
- Proposed changes: Demolish existing wood front and side porch and rebuild using AZEK T & G decking and ceiling, metal roof, PVC railing; and rear addition on the single-family home.
- Decision: APPROVED with conditions: (1) in-kind turned porch spindles are to be used, and (2) the portico/vestibule was to be repaired.
Appeal and Denial:
An appeal was filed regarding 114 Pine Street, and the matter was heard at the Town Council meeting on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. The appeal, however, was denied, reinforcing the board’s commitment to maintaining the historical character of Cape Charles.
