CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Town of Cape Charles is looking to fill a new full-time position aimed at bolstering oversight of its growing short-term rental market, which has expanded significantly in recent years.
Town officials announced this week that they are seeking an entry-level Short-Term Rental (STR) Compliance Officer to inspect properties, investigate complaints and ensure owners comply with the Statewide Building Code, Town Code and Zoning Ordinance. The position reports to both the town’s Director of Planning & Zoning and the Code Enforcement Officer.
“This is a ‘boots on the ground’ position designed to help us address compliance concerns and provide better customer service to residents and property owners,” officials said in the announcement.
Like many tourist destinations, Cape Charles has seen an increase in vacation rentals through platforms such as Airbnb and Vrbo. While these properties bring in tourism revenue, they have also raised concerns about parking, noise and compliance with safety regulations. Town officials said the new position will help balance the needs of property owners, renters and permanent residents.
The job will also involve preparing monthly and annual STR compliance reports. Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Excel, have strong organizational and communication skills, and be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
Experience in construction, building inspections, zoning, real estate, property management or compliance enforcement is preferred, but not required. Applicants must have a valid Virginia driver’s license in good standing and be willing to take state-level classes to obtain licensure.
The full-time, non-exempt position includes overtime eligibility and a comprehensive benefits package, including state retirement through the Virginia Retirement System.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Completed Town Employment Applications can be submitted in person at 2 Plum Street, Cape Charles, VA 23310, or by email at humanresources@capecharles.org.
