CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Five of Cape Charles’s appointed boards will present their annual reports to the Town Council at the next Regular Meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, March 19th.
Each board chairman has been invited to appear before the Council to deliver their respective report. Town staff has confirmed they will be present to deliver any report on behalf of a chairman who is unable to attend, and will be prepared to field questions from Council members.
Who’s Leading the Boards
The five boards and their current leadership are:
- Planning Commission — Bill Stramm, Chairman
- Board of Zoning Appeals — Bill Stramm, Chairman
- Wetlands and Coastal Sand Dune Board — John Schoeneck, Chairman
- Historic District Review Board — Kathy Glaser, Chairman
- Harbor Area Review Board — Stuart Smith, Chairman
Why the Reports Are Required
For three of the five boards, the annual reporting process is a matter of state law. The Code of Virginia requires the Planning Commission to report annually to its local governing body on the commission’s operations and the status of planning within its jurisdiction. The Board of Zoning Appeals and the Wetlands and Coastal Sand Dune Board are similarly required by state code to maintain full public records and submit yearly activity reports. The Wetlands and Coastal Sand Dune Board must also forward a copy of its report to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.
The Historic District Review Board and the Harbor Area Review Board carry no such specific state mandate, but town leadership notes that annual reporting serves as a valuable tool to keep the Council informed on the activities of the boards it appoints and to ensure those boards are advancing the policies, goals, and objectives of the Town.
The Regular Meeting will be held on March 19th. Residents interested in hearing from their town’s appointed boards are encouraged to attend.
