Complaints and Ilegal Construction in Cape Charles
If you follow the calendar of the Historic District Review Board, they are getting slammed with new and pre-applications for work and renovations in the Historic District. The last time we counted, there were over 20 applications filling the docket.
In some cases, folks either don’t know, or don’t care about the process of obtaining a Certificate of Appropriateness for work to take place in the Historic District.
Below is a list of complaints and current violations:
• 547 Mason Ave – Work stopped on exterior siding. Needs HDRB approval
• 614 Strawberry St. – Construction of house with windows that do not meet HDRB approval
• 509 Monroe Ave – New fence
• 527 Monroe Ave – New roof on front porch without HDRB approval
• 209 Mason Ave – Front glass change without HDRB approval
• 203 Madison Ave – removal of chimney without permit
• 616 Tazewell Ave – New fence
Pet of the week: Meet Scottie
Meet Scottie!
Hi, I’m Scottie and I’m a 4 year old Border Collie mix, but very petite, weighing only 19 lbs.
I will need just the right home, as I am timid, and also always on the go. My new family will HAVE to have experience with my breed, and some patience while I get to know them.
I have not shown much interest in interacting with people while I’ve been here, but will typically come up and take treats-and I’m not too gentle doing that, either.
I have been neutered and am up to date on vaccines, as well as testing negative for heartworms.
If you’re interested in adopting, email shorespca@gmail.com to request an application; due to COVID 19, we are not allowing people inside our building yet, and schedule visits after we’ve received, and looked over, adoption applications.

This year’s VMFA On The Road exhibit is entitled “A View from Home: Landscapes of Virginia.” Each year, the VMFA artmobile travels across the landscape of Virginia from the Eastern Shore to the mountains of the Southwest. This exhibition of paintings, photographs, woodblock prints, and engravings from the museum’s permanent collection explores the diversity and beauty of these natural realms. The collection showcases artists of various styles and periods, who together record both the sublimity of unspoiled nature and the impact of human activity throughout the commonwealth.

Gov. Ralph Northam loosens some Covid Restrictions
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC)- Gov. Ralph Northam is loosening some coronavirus restrictions in Virginia beginning in March.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Northam said the changes will impact the state’s curfew, alcohol sales, social gatherings, entertainment venues and summer camps.
Northam’s updated guidelines will lift the ‘modified stay-at-home’ order currently in place between midnight to 5 a.m. The measure first took effect in mid-December to mitigate surges in COVID-19 cases during the holidays.
The order also changes the cutoff on alcohol sales to midnight–pushed back from the 10 p.m. cutoff that was put in place in November. Restaurants, bars and breweries must continue to close by midnight under the new restrictions.
