CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. — Mayor Denise Bowden announced Monday via a Facebook video that authorities are investigating a threat made against the 100th anniversary Pony Penning, scheduled for July. The popular annual event, which draws thousands to Chincoteague Island, was specifically named on a list of intended targets for attacks in the United States shared by the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), a regional branch of the Islamic State.
The list, reported Sunday by MSN.com, includes various potential targets across the country. ISKP emerged as a branch of the Islamic State after the group was dismantled in Iraq and Syria and has been associated with high-profile attacks in recent years.
Bowden appeared alongside Chincoteague Police Chief Tyler Greenly and another town officer during her announcement, emphasizing the town’s commitment to safety. “The security of our residents and visitors is our highest priority,” she said. “We are working closely with local, state, and federal authorities to ensure that this year’s Pony Penning will be safe and enjoyable for everyone.”
The mayor urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local police. “If you see something, say something. Every precaution will be taken to protect our community and our cherished traditions,” she said.
Pony Penning, an event featuring the iconic Chincoteague ponies, is a cornerstone of the town’s identity and a significant draw for tourists. This year’s celebration marks a century of the tradition, further heightening the stakes for local authorities to ensure its success.
Chief Greenly assured residents that the police department is coordinating with relevant agencies to address the threat. “We take this matter very seriously,” Greenly said. “Our team is already implementing enhanced security measures and will continue to do so as we approach the event.”
The investigation into the threat remains ongoing.
