Growing up in a rural area, many of us learn early that the wide-open back roads offer freedom and sometimes, unfortunately, temptation. The usual youthful hormones and impulses can linger well into adulthood, but it is time we try to curb them.
Deer run amok, hidden driveways appear without warning, and sadly, accidents often happen closest to home. A recent post in Shore Daily News highlighted the tragic number of fatalities on the Shore, citing speeding, deer, fixed objects, and driving under the influence as major contributors.
I remember studying at William & Mary near the Mason School of Business as it was being constructed. The school implemented lit-up pedestrian crossings and reactive lighting to guide drivers and walkers more safely. Witnessing such innovations made a lasting impression on me about how thoughtful infrastructure can prevent accidents.
This past weekend, I experienced a frightening incident near the dump on Arlington Road. A driver came barreling down the road at about 55 mph, far too fast for these back roads, and nearly caused a serious accident. I reported it to Sheriff Doughty, who kindly responded and noted that this section of road can be confusing for drivers because the speed limit changes and entrances appear suddenly.
I write this letter hoping to raise awareness. Back roads may feel safe, but it is when our guard is down that problems arise. Please slow down, watch for deer, be mindful of hidden driveways, and respect your neighbors’ safety. Every life matters.
