  1. Meribah happened to notice that some other birds were posing as ducks in order to get all the free food.

They stayed up on her deck because they were not aquatic and they all learned how to bang on the storm door. As if the noise wasn’t enough aggravation the deck was now a slippery, fowl (pun intended) mess from all the droppings.

The summer of 1958 was extremely wet & we had a large hatch of Jersey mosquitos. Sadly we had an outbreak of Eatern Equine Enchephilis transmitted to humans by the pesky night flying mosquito & seven local young children died from the disease. The incubation period was 14 days and our students were very worried whether they had it or not. I was in the middle of teaching a class when one boy flipped out. He was sure he had it & he was certain he was dying. I carried the boy to the nurse’s office & she got him back under control. None of our students had the illness as it affected the very young & the elderly.

In 1962 the wisdom of the school’s location became apparent when it served for a solid week as a shelter for Islanders displaced by the March Storm. Everyone pitched in with Ft Dix providing a generator & cots, local businesses donating food & the cafeteria workers doing the preparing, teachers serving the food & helping with housekeeping and the volunteer fire & first aid on hand 24/7.
