CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Northampton Historic Preservation Society (NHPS) will kick off its 2025 “Lecture on the Lawn” series with a presentation by Dr. David Scott at Myrtle Grove, a well-preserved 18th-century gambrel roof-style colonial home located on Seaside Road. The event will take place Sunday, May 4, at 2:00 p.m.
Owned by John and Crystal Marshall, Myrtle Grove features striking architectural details and a rich historical narrative. Dr. Scott’s lecture promises to delve into the property’s past, particularly its ties to the Kendall, West, Nottingham, and Downing families. Attendees can expect a deep dive into intriguing local lore, including speculation on whether Myrtle Grove once served as a tavern, its potential role in a seaside plantation network, and even the mystery of whether Colonel William Kendall had two sons with the same name.
Located at 13033 Seaside Road between Machipongo and Bird’s Nest, the event is open to the public. Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably, bring lawn chairs, and enjoy an afternoon of storytelling and historical exploration. While admission is free, a suggested donation of $10 is appreciated to support NHPS’s preservation efforts.
