  1. Re 1945: Thanks for the good coverage of the flight and expulsion (Flucht und Vertreibung) of the Eastern Germans. The Germans from east of the Oder river, the ethnic German linguistic islands and the Sudetenland lost about 2.5 million (mostly women and children) dead during the events that led to the near total ethnic cleansing (genocide) of these former German lands. The Wilhelm Gustlof was only one of three huge maritime disasters – the Goya and the General Von Steuben took another 10,000 lives. I just finished reading about the Lusitania, a horrible and criminal sinking (even though the Lusitania has been proven to be carrying munitions for the British army) which makes one want to vomit, the same is true of these WWII disasters that were much, much larger – and the three ships were carrying only refugees and wounded soldiers.
