Accomack, Va. — Residents living with memory loss and their care partners will soon have a welcoming place to connect and socialize when a Memory Café gathering is held Wednesday, March 18, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Eastern Shore of Virginia Regional Library & Heritage Center.
The Memory Cafe is held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
The monthly program is led by the Martha W. Goodson Center and is designed as a relaxed social environment for individuals experiencing memory changes—such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or other cognitive challenges—and the family members or friends who support them.
Organizers say the café is meant to be an informal, stigma-free space where people can enjoy conversation, light refreshments, and activities while meeting others in the community who share similar experiences.
The event is free and open to the public. No RSVP is required.

What is a Memory Café?
Memory Cafés are community gatherings that have become increasingly common in towns and cities across the country as a way to support people living with cognitive decline while reducing social isolation.
Unlike clinical support groups, Memory Cafés focus on social engagement and community connection rather than medical discussion or therapy. Sessions typically include:
- Casual conversation in a welcoming setting
- Coffee, snacks, or refreshments
- Music, art, or simple interactive activities
- Opportunities for caregivers and participants to share experiences
- Facilitators trained to support individuals with memory changes
Programs are designed so participants can attend comfortably regardless of where they are in their memory-loss journey.
Who Can Attend
Anyone experiencing memory loss or concerned about cognitive changes is welcome to attend. Care partners—including spouses, family members, or friends—are encouraged to come as well.
The Martha W. Goodson Center notes that the gatherings are intended to help people maintain social connections, reduce isolation, and provide caregivers with a supportive community.
A Monthly Gathering
The Memory Café will take place on the third Wednesday of each month at the Eastern Shore of Virginia Regional Library & Heritage Center.
Organizers say the program is part of a broader effort to provide education, clinical support, and community resources for families navigating memory-related conditions.
Residents interested in learning more about the Memory Café or other programs offered by the Martha W. Goodson Center can attend the session on March 18 or inquire through the library.
