Supervisor Duer Questions Wisdom of New Vehicle Purchases

Northampton County Supervisor Robert Duer, during Monday’s Regular Meeting questioned the need of purchasing new vehicles for the Sheriff’s department when up to date revenue data from the Sheriff’s department was not being provided to the Board of Supervisors. The data is over two months behind.

Finance Director Andrzejewski noted that unspent overtime funds would offset the $60-80,000 in budget shortfalls of the Sheriff’s department. Most revenue is derived from fine collection.

Duer is challenging the wisdom of purchasing  a new vehicle and hiring 2 additional employees when the revenue projection shortfall could continue in the future.

While Supervisor Hogg outlined other expenditures such as including demolition of buildings, the middle school mold and roof problems, and other anticipated unfunded costs, Duer proposed an amendment that would delay the purchase of Sheriff’s vehicles until the beginning of the third quarter of the 2017-2018. At that point, actual revenues of the Sheriff’s department would be known.

The amendment was approved by the Board.
