Town Staff is proposing a zoning ordinance update to parking requirements, off-street parking, and loading requirements.
Town Planner Zach Ponds told Town Council that the “proposed changes better implement the Town’s Comprehensive Plan by enhancing multi-modal transportation opportunities and creating a more walkable, pedestrian-friendly environment.”
Ponds noted that the changes will promote economic growth, increased safety, enhanced aesthetics, and good health for citizens and visitors.
The updates include the following:

D – Bicycle parking
E – Golf cart parking
F – Electric vehicle charging stations
G – Parking in non-single-family zoning districts
H – Compact parking spaces
I – Stacking spaces for drive-through service windows and drive-through facilities
J – Landscaping in parking lots
K – Access management
L – Provisions for off-street loading
M – Dumpsters
Electric Charging Stations – Electric vehicle charging stations are permitted in all off-street surface parking lots and parking structures. Spaces reserved for electric vehicle charging stations may be counted as part of the minimum required parking spaces but shall not be counted toward the maximum. Any new building with over 20,000 square feet of gross floor area space shall equip at least one required parking space on its property with an electric vehicle charging station prior to receiving a Certificate of Occupancy.
The total number of permitted parking spaces shall not exceed 110 percent of the minimum number of off-street parking spaces required by type of permitted use, except when the excess spaces are contained in a parking structure.
Any parking not included within a parking structure that is between 100 and 110 percent of the minimum number of off-street parking spaces required shall be “grasscrete” or “grasspave” or other pervious paving systems as approved by the Zoning Administrator.

About the Author
Having enough designated parking is certainly important. Parking places are getting more precious especially during the summer months. What about all the campers, trailers, boats and other vacation type vehicles? They should not take up spaces needed for resident cars/golf carts and visitor vehicles.
I agree with ‘interested resident’. I also wonder who will pay the electric bill for the charging stations? Right now numerous people charge their golf carts at the town marina’s outlets on the bathroom wall facing the Shanty. Who pays for that?
