Residents of Shore Rehabilitation Center in Parksley – Safely transitioning to new facilities due to multiple building issues.
Eastern Shore –VA- Riverside will operate the Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center until October 21, 2017. During this period, Riverside will work with the 89 long-term care residents to find a new home with the appropriate level of care. In addition, there are an additional 12 residents that we anticipate to be discharged to home within 60 days. The closure will also affect 128 team members currently working at the facility. Riverside is currently meeting with each team member to help them find employment either within Riverside Health System or other employment opportunities. Support will also be provided for resume writing and job interviewing skills.
“The Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center infrastructure has outlived its useful life expectancy.” said Ed Heckler, Vice President of Riverside Lifelong Health division “Our most viable alternative is to close the facility.” he continued.
The decision to close is based on multiple building issues primarily caused by age of facility.
“Our top priority is to ensure the safe and appropriate transition of our residents.” said Bill Downey, President and CEO of Riverside Health System, “We also are committed to providing our team members support in this transition.” Downey continued.
Riverside is committed to the care and well-being of the Eastern Shore community. In the eight years we have served the region, we have recruited specialists and primary care providers, upgraded and installed new medical and information technologies and most recently opened the new Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital and Cancer Center.
We are prepared to help support our Residents and their loved ones within other Riverside facilities as well as working with our Shore community partners. Riverside will continue its commitment both on the Shore and in the region to support the long-term care needs of the community.
Unfortunately, the old hospital cannot be used because it is not licensed or built to code for a nursing facility.

This is what you get with “big box hospitals” …not a word about whether the shore and its residents NEED this facility. One might note Riverside’s mission statement. I think it was originally built and run by accomack county ? Then Riverside got it when it got the hospital. In the future, will there be more and more older eastern shore citizens needing such facilities ? Was this question asked and answered prior to this decision by Riverside? Maybe Accomack county can build a new one with all the new tax income from the chicken houses!
Organizations like Riverside feel they know more about what you all need, than you do. It is a shame you cannot dial back the years to 1950 and try again. The changes that have been allowed on The Shore are disturbing and in most cases, disgusting. The CBBT has brought it all to your doors.
