Campbell Field Airport at Weirwood, Va. in Northampton County on the Eastern Shore is now an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) landing site for the Sentara Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance. Donors to the Sentara Foundation Hampton Roads, which funded the IFR consultant, were honored during a ceremony at the newly installed helipad Thursday, August 23rd. Donors from the Shore community contributed to the Sentara Foundation to help assure emergency air access during weather conditions that currently prevent Nightingale from flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). Final FAA approval is expected later this year.
With $180,000 from the Sentara Foundation Hampton Roads, a consultant is finalizing eight FAA-approved IFR routes for Nightingale in the Hampton Roads region. These reserved air lanes will allow Nightingale to fly safely in bad weather to meet ground ambulances in outlying areas, saving precious time for critically ill or injured patients and keeping those ambulances in their communities, ready for additional calls.
Campbell Field Airport is located off Route 13 at 9114 Bayford Road, Weirwood, VA 23413.
