MELFA, Va. — Representatives from Eastern Shore Virginia’s leading tourism organizations gathered for their monthly tourism board meeting to discuss collaborative marketing efforts across the region.
The meeting, held in Melfa, brought together representatives from Cape Charles Main Street, Onancock Main Street and the Virginia Tourism Corporation, continuing a regular dialogue focused on promoting the entire Eastern Shore as a unified destination.
Both Cape Charles and Onancock have been designated as Virginia Main Street communities and recently earned Accredited Main Street America status, the program’s top tier of recognition for their commitment to preservation-based economic development and community revitalization.
The partnership comes at a time when Eastern Shore tourism organizations are actively leveraging state funding to boost regional visibility. Recent state tourism grants have provided significant support to local initiatives, with Onancock Main Street receiving $10,800, Cape Charles Main Street awarded $2,000 for its Sailfest event, and the Town of Cape Charles receiving a $10,000 destination marketing organization grant.
Tourism is a major economic driver for the region, with visitors to the Shore spending more than $222 million in 2019, supporting 2,223 work opportunities and contributing over $17 million in local and state tax revenue.
The collaborative approach addresses the challenge of marketing the Eastern Shore’s diverse attractions, from the car-less Tangier Island and 14 undeveloped seaside barrier islands to historic waterfront towns and the region’s proximity to rocket launches from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport.
Cape Charles, with a population of around 1,000, has experienced significant growth in recent years, attracting new residents, businesses and tourists through downtown revitalization efforts. The town features a sandy beach and deep-water harbor that make it attractive to visitors.
Onancock, chartered in 1608 as a port town with under 1,200 residents, offers visitors award-winning restaurants, a live theater, art galleries, and serves as the departure point for ferry service to Tangier Island.
The meetings are part of ongoing efforts to coordinate marketing strategies and identify partnership opportunities that leverage each community’s unique attractions while promoting the Eastern Shore as a comprehensive destination.
