RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia ranks among the more stressed states in the nation, according to new research released by iSelect, a health insurance comparison service that analyzed survey responses and national data sets to measure stress levels across the country.
The study examined survey data from Americans alongside 28 national data sets, ranking each state from 1, the most stressed, to 50, the least stressed, based on several major stress categories. Virginia placed 20th overall, with an overall stress score of 49.3 out of 100.
In category-specific rankings, Virginia performed relatively better in mental health stress, ranking 45th, indicating lower stress compared with many other states. The state ranked 31st for work-related stress and 27th for relationship stress.
Financial pressures emerged as a more significant concern. Virginia ranked 11th for financial stress, 12th for education-related stress, and 13th for health-related financial stress, placing it among the more stressed states nationally in those categories.
The findings mirror broader national survey results cited in the study, which show financial stress as the leading source of emotional strain for Americans, affecting about half of respondents. Lifestyle pressures followed at 29%, with health concerns cited by 27% and work or school stress by 22%.
According to iSelect, the rankings highlight how economic pressures continue to weigh heavily on households, even in states that perform better in areas such as mental health and work-life balance. The full study and methodology are available through iSelect’s published report.
