Many of the oldest and most vibrant American religious musical traditions have their origins in Virginia, and they still flourish today. Old Regular Baptists in Virginia’s mountains sing in the old “call and response” fashion of their British forebearers, and African-American congregations maintain the traditional spirituals sung by their enslaved ancestors.
Come learn about these compelling traditions with Gregg Kimball and Cluny Brown, who will present a multimedia presentation featuring rare photographs, period recordings, and live music featuring sacred quartets, shape-note singers, and spiritual shout bands.
