CAPE CHARLES, Va. — A new initiative aimed at tackling climate challenges on the Eastern Shore of Virginia will be introduced at a workshop on Feb. 12 at the Northampton YMCA. The event, scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m., will present the Eastern Shore of Virginia Livability Hub, a resource developed with community input to address the region’s most pressing climate concerns and opportunities.
The workshop is open to the public, and organizers are encouraging attendees to RSVP to assist with planning efforts.
The initiative comes as part of a larger effort supported by a $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The funding was awarded to an interdisciplinary team working to build community capacity in rural coastal Virginia for climate adaptation and resilience. The project is led by Environmental Institute Director Karen McGlathery and involves faculty from multiple institutions, including the University of Virginia’s College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering, and School of Architecture, as well as UVA’s Biocomplexity Institute, Equity Center, and Institute for Engagement and Negotiation. Collaborators also include William & Mary’s Coastal Policy Center and Old Dominion University’s Resilience Collaborative.

The NSF Coastlines and People (“CoPe”) grant program funds multi-institutional projects designed to address hazards and other challenges facing coastal communities. Organizers say the project will create opportunities for various groups to engage in shaping climate research and policy solutions for the Eastern Shore.
