Second Act Communities and Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation Annual Meeting hosted at Tidewater Community College awards several Community Leaders

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. April 30, 2018 – On April 25, 2018, Second Act Communities and Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation hosted their Annual Meeting with Gary McCollum as the Keynote Speaker. With nearly 100 people in attendance, the audience was captivated by the different stories they heard during the program. Also, people from Hampton Roads and North Carolina received awards in recognition for their work in their communities.

Gary McCollum, community leader, minister, veteran, and businessman spoke about Change and being the spark that lights a flame to start a movement. The take-home message from his address was being ready to go even if you must go first. His speech was titled after the words of leader Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in others.”

Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation serves individuals from many different backgrounds in need of housing stability. They call the individuals who receive their services, neighbors. During the program, one of the neighbors in the Support Services for Veteran Families told his story about his journey to housing stability and sobriety and the role that the nonprofit played in this journey. His story was extremely touching and really emphasized the importance of the mission that the two organizations have.

President and Chief Executive Officer, Addie Thomason, recognized two individuals, Charles Wright and Marcus Scriven for the 2018 President’s Award for Excellence in Community Service. There were four volunteers of the year chosen, two from each organization. The recipients for 2018 Volunteer of the Year for Second Act Communities and Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation are Alex Watson, Courtney Lalonde, Erica Johnson, and Yvonnia Moore. The last awards were surprise awards in recognition of two board member’s relentless dedication to serving the community with no expectation of praise for themselves. Jim Banks, Second Act Communities’ Board Chair, and Wanda Cooper, Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation Interim Board Chair were the recipients of the 2018 Servant Leadership Award.
