Congresswoman Elaine Luria Highlights Environmental Priorities and Legislative Accomplishments with Chesapeake Bay Advisory Board

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA— Today, Congresswoman Elaine Luria met with her Chesapeake Bay Advisory Board to brief our region’s key stakeholders about her legislative efforts to protect and preserve the Chesapeake Bay.

“The Chesapeake Bay is an irreplaceable economic, environmental, and recreational resource that we must preserve for future generations of Coastal Virginians,” said Congresswoman Elaine Luria. “It was a pleasure to meet with members of my Chesapeake Bay Advisory Board to learn how I can support efforts to ensure our Bay remains clean and thriving.”

Congresswoman Luria provided an update on the Chesapeake Bay Program Reauthorization Act (H.R. 1620), which she introduced last year. The bill, as amended, authorizes a total of $455 million in appropriations for the Bay Program through FY2025. This bill passed the House in December 2019 and February 2020.

The Chesapeake Bay Program Reauthorization Act has also been included in a broader conservation and outdoor recreation bill. This bill, H.R. 925 or the America’s Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Act, has passed both the House and Senate, but in different forms. The bill now awaits a final vote in the House before it can go to the President’s desk for his signature.

Additionally, Congresswoman Luria emphasized her vote for the Great American Outdoors Act, as it was a very important bipartisan step in conservation law. This bill will permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which would significantly help the Chesapeake Area.
