WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Armed Services Committee (HASC) Vice Chair Elaine Luria today voted for the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a $768 billion defense budget that includes key investments in Coastal Virginia.
“This year’s defense budget strengthens the Hampton Roads economy, makes critical investments in our national defense, and takes important steps to counter the threat of a rising China,” Vice Chair Luria said. “I was proud to lead efforts in the House to secure an additional $24 billion for our national defense. I urge the Senate to pass this legislation without delay and ensure our military has the resources it needs to maintain readiness. It is the fundamental duty of congress to fund the government, and we must not be satisfied with a series of continuing resolutions that do not enable full implementation of the provisions in the NDAA, including a much-deserved 2.7 percent pay raise for servicemembers and $27 billion for shipbuilding.”
This year’s NDAA (S.1605) was introduced after an agreement was reached between the leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees. It contains $23.9 billion in additional defense spending above the President’s budget request and more than $27.2 billion for shipbuilding that Vice Chair Luria helped secure, which includes protecting two (2) guided missile cruisers from decommissioning, advanced procurement to ramp up production of Virginia class submarines to three per year, and purchasing three (3) Arleigh Burke-class destroyers (DDG-51), one (1) America-class amphibious assault ship (LHA), one (1) Constellation-class guided missile Frigate (FFG), two (2) Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF) and other support ships.
Vice Chair Luria also helped secure $13 billion for Military Construction projects, including: $88.9 million for Naval Station Norfolk and $24 million for Joint Base Langley-Eustis.
