The Historic District Review Board convened for its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 16, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. to assess several Certificate of Appropriateness applications pertaining to properties within the historic district.
Among the applications reviewed were the following:
- 10 Tazewell Avenue: The application proposed the construction of a 228 sq. ft. rear addition, a 192 sq. ft. rear screen porch, a 204 sq. ft. rear deck, and a 306 sq. ft. side addition to a single-family dwelling. Additionally, plans included the installation of custom wood doors on an accessory structure and fencing to match existing property boundaries. The board approved the application with the condition that CCHODG Section 5.4.1 (2) (c) guidelines are adhered to.
- 514 Washington Avenue: The proposal sought permission to remove an existing open front porch and replace it with a new 146.4 sq. ft. covered porch. Additionally, plans included a 146.4 sq. ft. rear addition and the replacement of 1/1 vinyl/aluminum windows with new 1/1 vinyl windows, as well as the replacement of aluminum siding with new James Hardie siding on the single-family dwelling. The board granted approval with the condition that CCHODG Section 5.4.1 (2) (c) requirements are followed.
- 616 Strawberry Street: The application addressed concerns regarding construction without a Certificate of Appropriateness and Permit. Specifically, the applicant sought approval for a 256 sq. ft. detached patio in the rear yard. The board granted approval under the condition that the patio would remain unattached to the house in the future.
Each application underwent thorough review and consideration, taking into account the historical significance and architectural integrity of the properties involved. The decisions reflect the board’s commitment to preserving the character and heritage of the Cape Charles Historic District while accommodating necessary improvements and renovations.
