Cape Charles Historic District Review Board Approves Porch Modification Amid Compliance Concerns

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Historic District Review Board has approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for a porch modification at 646 Tazewell Avenue, following a series of site visits and compliance checks by town officials.

During routine site visits, Planning and Zoning staff discovered unapproved work being carried out on a side stoop, prompting an investigation. Zoning Administrator Katie Nunez was informed that the stoop was not included in the previously approved Certificate of Appropriateness. The property owner, Ms. Eidam, was contacted and later met with staff to discuss the project’s scope.

Concerns regarding building code compliance led to a subsequent site visit by Nunez and Code Official Jeb Brady. After assessing the situation, the property owner was ordered to halt all work on the stoop until the necessary paperwork was submitted and required approvals were obtained.

Ms. Eidam will widen the east side stoop from 70 inches to 130 inches, while maintaining its depth at 30 inches. The project also includes repairs to the rear porch of the two-story single-family home.

The Historic District Review Board found that the proposed materials and design adhered to the town’s Historic District Guidelines, allowing the project to move forward.
