The Coast Guard issued a safety broadcast Notice to Mariners on Friday, warning of significant ice coverage in several waterways. According to the notice, the C&D Canal, Welch Point to Nine Foot Knoll, and Turkey Point are experiencing 40% ice coverage with ice up to two inches thick.
Further south, areas from Quantico to Alexandria, Virginia, as well as the D.C. Harbor and Anacostia River, are seeing 30% ice coverage consisting of packed ice approximately one inch thick. The Nanticoke and Wicomico rivers reported 15% ice coverage with a similar thickness of one inch.
In response to the hazardous conditions, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Coast Guard have deployed icebreaker boats to ensure navigational safety. John Gallagher, a spokesperson for DNR, stated that their teams have been breaking ice in sheltered areas where winds have caused significant accumulation. On Monday, DNR sent a vessel to break ice in Selby Bay, the South River, and at the Bay Bridge Marina after reports that boats were unable to navigate through the ice.
Mariners are advised to exercise caution and remain updated on the latest conditions as colder temperatures continue to affect the region’s waterways.
