OYSTER, Va. — Anglers and outdoor enthusiasts have a scenic new spot to cast a line in Northampton County with the opening of the Oyster Fishing Pier, a public waterfront amenity designed to boost recreation and tourism on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
The newly constructed pier, free and open to the public, eliminates a common hurdle for casual fishers. No saltwater fishing license is required to fish from the pier, thanks to Northampton County covering the licensing fee on behalf of residents and visitors.
The project was overseen by Northampton County Public Works Director Chris Thomas, with construction completed by Joint Forces Construction. Funding was provided through the Northampton County Tourism Grant for FY25, in partnership with the Virginia Port Authority.
Stretching roughly 200 feet long and 10 feet wide, the L-shaped timber and wood-framed structure includes built-in benches, accessible railing stations, and composite railing caps to enhance safety and comfort for users of all abilities.
Beyond the pier, visitors will find additional amenities including free public boat ramps, a floating and fixed dock combination, a kayak launch, and restroom facilities, making it a convenient hub for a full day on the water.
County officials are encouraging residents and tourists alike to explore everything Oyster and the surrounding area have to offer.
