Tyson seeks expanded permit for poultry waste land application across Eastern Shore

Temperanceville, Va. — Tyson Foods Inc. is seeking state approval to expand its ability to use industrial poultry waste as fertilizer across farmland on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

The company, which operates a major poultry processing facility in Temperanceville, has requested the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) reissue and modify its current permit to apply treated poultry waste on nearly 3,700 acres throughout Accomack and Northampton counties. The proposal represents a significant increase in the acreage covered under Tyson’s existing authorization.

Poultry waste is commonly used in crop production due to its high nutrient content. Tyson’s request involves the land application of “industrial poultry waste,” a byproduct of chicken processing that undergoes treatment before being spread on fields.

Eastern Shore agriculture has long relied on poultry byproducts as a cost-effective fertilizer, yet expansion proposals often draw close attention from environmental groups and local residents concerned about nutrient runoff and groundwater health. The Shore is uniquely vulnerable due to its shallow aquifer system and proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and seaside coastal waters.

DEQ will review the request under Virginia’s pollution abatement regulations, evaluating soil nutrient levels, setbacks from waterways, and long-term monitoring requirements. Public input is also expected to play a role in the final decision. Details regarding a public comment period or hearing have not yet been announced.

Farmers who partner with Tyson for land application could benefit from reduced fertilizer costs, though advocates for the region’s waterways warn that increased spreading acreage must be carefully managed to avoid excess nitrogen and phosphorus entering local creeks and bays.

The company’s Temperanceville plant is one of the Eastern Shore’s largest employers. Any modifications to its waste management practices are closely watched due to the facility’s sizable production volume.
