CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Memorial Library has seen a busy few weeks, welcoming hundreds of visitors, hosting community programs, and celebrating the joy of reading in creative ways.
According to Library Manager’s recent report, the library received 546 visitors and circulated 668 items over the past two weeks. Staff also prepared for upcoming storytime sessions, planning books, crafts, and activities to engage young readers.
Library Manager staff attended the Virginia Library Conference in Richmond, themed “With Libraries, All Rise.” The opening keynote speaker was Mychal Threets, the new host of Reading Rainbow. Threets, a nationally recognized librarian, was the recipient of the 2023 “I Love My Librarian” award from the American Library Association, named one of School Library Journal’s 2024 Movers and Shakers, and featured as one of TIME Magazine’s 2024 Next Generation Leaders.
Staff also participated in a VRSA webinar, “Are Your Facilities Ready for VOSH? Get Out and Look!”, aimed at improving workplace safety and facility readiness.
The library recently welcomed Karen Crumb as its new Library Assistant, who joined the team on September 29.
In early October, the library marked Banned Books Week with an interactive display and book giveaway to promote intellectual freedom and celebrate the freedom to read.
Over the past two weeks, staff have ordered 98 new and replacement titles to keep the collection fresh and relevant. They are also curating monthly displays and celebrations that highlight various themes and community interests.
