CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Town Council is scheduled to vote on a permanent location for downtown public restrooms at its meeting on January 8, 2026, following months of discussion and evaluation of multiple site options.
Council members will consider three proposals aimed at providing a long-term solution to the town’s long-standing need for accessible, centrally located public restrooms to serve residents, visitors, and the growing downtown business district.
The options before council include constructing a new restroom facility on leased land, entering into a lease agreement for space at 11 Peach Street, or leasing a facility at 7 Strawberry Street.
Town officials have previously emphasized the importance of establishing a reliable, year-round restroom location as tourism continues to increase and seasonal events draw larger crowds to downtown Cape Charles. Temporary and seasonal facilities have been used in the past, but leaders have said a permanent site would improve visitor experience, public health, and downtown operations.
The January 8 vote is expected to determine which option staff will move forward with, including finalizing lease terms or initiating design and construction plans if the council selects the build option.
The meeting will be open to the public, and residents will have an opportunity to observe the decision-making process on an issue that has been a recurring topic in town planning discussions.
