CAPE CHARLES, Va. — Cape Charles’ Capital Projects Manager provided a series of updates on major town initiatives, highlighting progress on infrastructure improvements, housing development efforts, and downtown projects.
A contract has been signed for the second phase of the Harbor Boardwalk Reconstruction project. The contractor is expected to begin work the week of January 5, continuing improvements to one of the town’s most visible waterfront assets.
In housing-related developments, the town’s evaluation committee has reviewed four proposals for a Workforce Housing Development project. Follow-up questions have been sent to three of the proposers, with responses due by January 30 as the review process continues.
Construction has begun on the Plum Street Accessible Parking Spaces, with excavation already underway. The contractor anticipates completing the work by mid-January.
The Capital Projects Manager is also working with the owner of the building at 7 Strawberry Street on a proposed lease agreement for public restrooms, one of several options under consideration for a permanent downtown restroom facility.
Sidewalk improvements are also being prioritized. The Capital Projects Manager met with the Town Manager and representatives of the Historic District Civic League to discuss sidewalk in-fill projects. Initial efforts will focus on Fig Street, with the goal of completing a safe, continuous walking route around the old town area.
Progress continues on the Library Redevelopment project, where the developer has nearly completed all repair work within the library space. Major construction work is expected to begin soon to reroute plumbing from the upper residential floors through the public restroom in the lobby. This phase of the project will require a temporary closure and near-total renovation of the restroom.
Town officials say the projects reflect ongoing efforts to improve accessibility, infrastructure, and public amenities throughout Cape Charles.
