CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Town Council has given Town Manager Rick Keuroglian permission to move forward with the purchase of a temporary public restroom trailer that will be located at the end of Peach Street, following clarification over whether the unit includes a holding tank.
The purchase had been placed on hold after town officials discovered uncertainty about whether the restroom trailer being built by Portable Restroom Trailers, LLC, could operate without a direct sewer hookup.
Keuroglian contacted the company’s sales representative to confirm the unit’s specifications. The vendor advised that the trailer currently under construction is designed for direct sewer connection only and cannot be used with a holding tank.
According to the manufacturer, restroom trailers are built either for direct sewer connection or for holding-tank use, but not both.
However, the vendor confirmed that the direct-connection unit can be replaced with a holding-tank model, and that two such units are currently available for immediate shipment.
Keuroglian then consulted with Public Works Director Ralph Bowen to determine the town’s operational preference. Bowen advised that a holding-tank unit would provide significantly more flexibility, allowing the trailer to be relocated for community events and seasonal needs.
At present, the town has only one location equipped with a direct sewer connection — the site where the town’s existing “Silver Bullet” restroom trailer is currently stationed.
With the holding-tank option, officials said the new trailer could serve multiple locations throughout the year rather than being fixed to a single site.
Keuroglian also noted that the town will be able to utilize the harbor’s pump-out unit to empty the trailer’s holding tank, eliminating the need for additional pumping infrastructure.
Following the clarification and operational review, Town Council authorized the Town Manager to proceed with purchasing the holding-tank restroom trailer, allowing the project to move forward without further delay.
