WACHAPREAGUE — The May edition of Science by the Sea will feature phycologist Dr. Ana Tavares, who will discuss seaweed research from the Western Antarctic Peninsula.
The seminar is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 6 at VIMS, 36 Atlantic Ave., Wachapreague.
Tavares will share “seaweed stories” from Antarctic coastal ecosystems, where seaweeds play an important role as ecosystem engineers. Her presentation will focus on research examining how reproductive strategies and environmental conditions shape the genetic diversity of seaweeds across different latitudes along the Western Antarctic Peninsula.
Organizers note that while Antarctic seaweeds are vital to coastal habitats, scientists still have limited knowledge about their reproductive biology and genetic diversity in extreme environments.
The event is open to the public, and registration is available online through the Science by the Sea event page.
