Cape Charles Seeks New Finance Manager for Town Treasurer’s Office

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Town of Cape Charles is looking to fill a Finance Manager position that will play a key role in overseeing the municipality’s financial operations, according to a job announcement released by the town.

The Finance Manager will report directly to the Town Treasurer and take on a broad range of accounting duties, including general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, financial reporting, budget monitoring, and oversight of the town’s accounts payable and receivable functions. The position will also handle fixed asset accounting, audit preparation, grant tracking, and financial analysis, and will step in for the Treasurer when he or she is unavailable.

According to the posting, the role calls for someone who can balance day-to-day accounting work with special projects, and who is comfortable working closely with the Treasurer, Town Manager, department heads, auditors, financial institutions, and the public.

Among the day-to-day responsibilities: preparing and posting journal entries, assisting with monthly and year-end closing, helping prepare the town’s actual-to-budget reports, maintaining fixed asset records, and supporting the annual financial audit. The position also involves processing and reconciling town revenues — including real estate, personal property, business license (BPOL), harbor, and permitting fees — along with tax and utility account collections, banking activities, and tax roll updates.

The town is seeking candidates with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field, along with at least two years of accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Officials noted that experience in governmental accounting, municipal finance, or budgeting is highly desirable, and that familiarity with Virginia local government finance would be a plus.

The position is full-time and non-exempt, with a salary range of $27.12 to $29.33 per hour ($56,404 to $61,007 annually), depending on qualifications. Benefits include participation in the Virginia Retirement System (VRS).

Town officials described the opening as a chance for an accounting professional to gain broad experience across municipal finance while contributing directly to Cape Charles’ small but close-knit Finance Department.
