Infrastructure and long-range planning projects continue moving forward in Cape Charles, according to a monthly update provided by the town’s Capital Projects Manager Bob Panek.
Work on the first phase of the Mason Avenue Electrical Upgrade is progressing as crews await shipment of new light poles expected to arrive next week. Once delivered, the contractor will complete wiring and installation. A&N Electric Cooperative has already removed four wooden utility poles and older highway-style lighting fixtures along the corridor.
The contractor has also completed most excavation and forming work needed to adjust planting beds and create sidewalks with a minimum width of five feet. Concrete work is expected to begin next week.
Additional accessibility improvements are underway on Mason Avenue as demolition has been completed for three new ADA-compliant ramps — two serving handicap parking spaces on the north side of the street and another at the Strawberry Street crosswalk on the south side. During construction, crews discovered a shallow electrical conduit that must be rerouted before concrete can be poured.
At the harbor, the town has awarded a contract for a new Automatic Tank Gauging system for the municipal fuel tanks. Installation is expected to be completed by the end of May.
The Capital Projects Manager also reported that several contractors have submitted requests for clarification regarding construction drawings for the new municipal building project. Those questions have been forwarded to HBA Architecture & Interior Design for review ahead of the May 22 bid deadline.
In addition to infrastructure projects, the manager participated in recent Town Council discussions regarding a proposed workforce housing development and coordinated the public presentation held May 12 at Town Hall.
Town Council was also briefed on the recommended six-year Capital Improvement Plan, which outlines future infrastructure priorities and major capital investments for the town.
