The Cape Charles Memorial Library and the University of Virginia Coastal Research Center are inviting residents and visitors to get hands-on with marine science this summer during the 2026 “Creature Catch, ID, & Release” program series at the Cape Charles beachfront.
The family-friendly events will take place near the fishing pier and give participants a chance to explore the shallow waters of the Chesapeake Bay while learning about local marine life. Organizers say attendees will help catch, identify, and safely release a variety of sea creatures commonly found along the shoreline.
Programs are scheduled for:
- May 21 at 9 a.m.
- June 29 at 4 p.m.
- July 22 at 9 a.m.
- August 13 at 4 p.m.
The events are being presented through a partnership between the Cape Charles Memorial Library, the Town of Cape Charles, and the University of Virginia Coastal Research Center.
The program is designed to introduce children and families to the ecology of the Eastern Shore in an engaging, hands-on setting. Participants may encounter crabs, small fish, shrimp, and other marine species while learning about the Bay’s coastal environment from staff and volunteers.
Photos and videos may be taken during the programs for use on the library’s website and social media platforms. Organizers note that anyone who does not wish to be photographed should notify library staff.
The events are free and open to the public.
