CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Town of Cape Charles is searching for a new planning and zoning administrator to guide the future growth and development of the historic coastal community.

Located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Cape Charles is known for its waterfront, walkable downtown, and thriving tourism economy. Town officials are seeking a department head who can balance thoughtful growth, historic preservation, and long-range planning.

The incoming administrator will oversee all aspects of the town’s planning and zoning operations. Key responsibilities include managing land use regulations, reviewing development and historic district applications, and coordinating code enforcement. The position also serves as the town’s official zoning administrator and subdivision agent.

Additionally, the director will direct long-range initiatives, including the implementation of the town’s Comprehensive Plan. The role requires close collaboration with the town manager, Town Council, the Planning Commission, business owners, and regional agencies to support responsible community development.

According to the job announcement, qualified candidates should have significant experience in planning, zoning, land use, or local government administration, as well as a strong knowledge of Virginia planning laws. A bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, public policy, or a related field is preferred.

Applicants must also be able to interpret ordinances, site plans, and blueprints, and possess strong public presentation skills. Virginia certifications related to zoning and planning are preferred, though candidates with the ability to obtain them will also be considered.
