CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. — Chincoteague Island has earned a spot among the nation’s best places to see bottlenose dolphins in the wild, according to a new data analysis by BoatBooker that places the Eastern Shore destination eighth in the country for documented dolphin sightings.
The ranking is based on bottlenose dolphin sighting records from OBIS-SEAMAP, a marine wildlife database maintained by Duke University’s Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. BoatBooker said it analyzed sightings across 356 U.S. coastal locations and more than 243,000 documented dolphins to create its 2026 ranking of top dolphin-watching destinations.
Chincoteague recorded 8,972 dolphins across 682 sighting events, placing it just behind Montauk, New York, and ahead of Harkers Island, North Carolina, in the top 10. The only Virginia location ranked higher was Virginia Beach, which came in third nationally with 15,429 documented dolphins.
BoatBooker said Chincoteague’s position reflects the island’s unique coastal setting, where the protected waters around Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and nearby Assateague Island create favorable habitat for dolphin pods that regularly feed and travel through the area in summer months.
“Chincoteague is best known for its wild ponies, but the dolphin data tells an equally compelling story,” BoatBooker CEO Vukan Simic said in a statement announcing the rankings. “Ranking No. 8 in the entire U.S. puts Chincoteague firmly on the map as one of America’s top destinations for dolphin watching.”
The report underscores how Chincoteague’s tourism appeal extends beyond its famous pony herd and beach access. The island has long been known for wildlife cruises and eco-tours, but the new ranking adds scientific weight to its reputation as one of the East Coast’s most reliable places to spot dolphins in the wild.
According to BoatBooker’s analysis, the top 10 U.S. dolphin-watching destinations were:
- Buxton, North Carolina — 20,128 dolphins
- Isle of Palms, South Carolina — 16,588
- Virginia Beach — 15,429
- Folly Beach, South Carolina — 14,443
- Nags Head, North Carolina — 13,292
- Holmes Beach, Florida — 9,902
- Montauk, New York — 9,120
- Chincoteague, Virginia — 8,972
- Harkers Island, North Carolina — 8,340
- Nantucket, Massachusetts — 6,624
BoatBooker said the rankings reflect documented dolphin activity rather than absolute population size, noting that some regions may rank lower simply because they have had fewer scientific surveys. Even so, the company said the findings point to Chincoteague as one of the country’s standout destinations for summer wildlife viewing.
