A new study warns that single-use plastics are accumulating at alarming rates in the tidal marshes of America’s largest estuary — and poor waste management is largely to blame.
Researchers from the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Barcelona (UB) have found that floating litter has increasingly invaded Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States and one of the most ecologically significant in the world. Their findings, published in the journal Marine Pollution Bulletin, underscore a growing threat to coastal ecosystems and call for urgent action to reduce single-use plastic waste.
Marshes Turned Pollution Hotspots
The study examined anthropogenic macrolitter (AML) — human-made debris larger than 2.5 cm — deposited in wrack zones along 27 tidal-marsh sites throughout the Chesapeake Bay estuary. Wrack refers to the debris that accumulates along the upper intertidal zone, deposited by waves and tides. Historically composed of natural materials like wood and plant matter, modern wrack increasingly contains man-made waste.
Researchers found AML levels ranging from 56 to 4,481 items per kilometer and 0.9 to 254 kg per kilometer of wrack — with the highest concentrations found in the inner estuary, closest to major population centers. As distance from urban areas increased, pollution levels dropped significantly.
Single-Use Plastics Dominate
Of all the litter collected, a striking 90% was plastic, and nearly three-quarters of items measured between 2 and 25 cm. The vast majority — 93.5% — was positively buoyant, meaning it floats and spreads easily through waterways.
Food and beverage packaging from at least 52 different companies was identified across the estuary’s tidal marshes, which cover more than 1,200 km² along Chesapeake Bay’s 18,800-km shoreline. Most of these items had a lifespan of less than one year, pointing squarely at single-use consumer products as the primary culprit.
Older bottles — some four to more than ten years old — were found concentrated in the inner estuary, while newer bottles dominated the outer estuary, suggesting a pattern of long-distance litter transport over time.
Where Is It Coming From?
More than half of the AML originated from land-based sources, with over 60% linked to poor waste management practices. Food-consumption items accounted for 38.9% of all litter found, while fisheries-related items made up another 6.2%.
Much of the floating waste traces back to urban areas and careless everyday behavior — discarded packaging, litter left in parks and recreational spaces, and debris thrown from boats.
A Threat to Ecosystem Health
The consequences extend well beyond aesthetics. Floating litter degrades the environmental health of the areas where it accumulates and can disrupt critical ecological processes, including gas exchange, biological activity, and carbon storage. Wildlife is also at risk.
Marshes with denser vegetation were found to trap more AML, making them particularly vulnerable accumulation zones for urban-derived waste — and amplifying the potential impact on ecosystems already under pressure.
A Global Problem
The Chesapeake Bay findings are not an isolated case. Plastics are the predominant type of waste found in mangroves, on beaches, in sand dunes, and across other coastal ecosystems around the world. The researchers emphasize that this study represents one of the few detailed, regional-scale analyses of macro-litter pollution in tidal marshes conducted anywhere globally.
Their conclusion is clear: reducing single-use plastic waste is a key measure for protecting coastal ecosystems everywhere.
The research team calls for the inner estuary and its wrack deposits to be prioritized for further study on litter transport, deposition, and carbon-related effects — as well as for targeted mitigation efforts.
