CAPE CHARLES, Va. — A day at the beach can be challenging for people who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility, but the Town of Cape Charles is reminding residents and visitors that specialized beach wheelchairs are available to help make the town’s waterfront more accessible.
A town announcement encourages anyone needing a beach wheelchair to contact town staff to arrange a loan. According to the notice, users must complete a loan agreement and have a credit card on file before borrowing the equipment. Reservations and additional information are available by contacting Pam through the town’s administration office.
Unlike standard wheelchairs, beach wheelchairs are designed with large, low-pressure wheels that can travel across soft sand, allowing users to reach the shoreline more easily. The equipment can benefit individuals with permanent disabilities as well as those recovering from injuries or facing temporary mobility challenges.
The program reflects a growing emphasis on making public beaches accessible to everyone. Across Virginia and the United States, many coastal communities have introduced beach wheelchair programs as part of broader efforts to improve access to parks, waterfronts and recreational spaces for people of all abilities.
