ONANCOCK, Va. — Shore History will host a lecture examining conflicts on the Chesapeake Bay during the American Revolution and the archaeological discoveries that continue to shed light on the region’s role in the struggle for independence.
“The Eyes of All…Are Turned Upon Us!” will be presented by marine archaeologist Steve Bilicki on Friday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. at Ker Place, 69 Market Street in Onancock.
Bilicki will explore the history of conflicts that unfolded on and around the Chesapeake Bay as Britain’s North American colonies broke away from English rule and declared independence.
While much of the traditional history of the American Revolution focuses on major land battles, the Chesapeake was also an important theater of military activity. According to Shore History’s event announcement, events in the colonies were closely watched by the wider world as the rebellion developed into a challenge to the British Empire.
The presentation will examine some of that history through the perspective of marine archaeology, including archaeological discoveries connected to conflicts in the Chesapeake region.
The lecture is part of Shore History’s programming at Ker Place, the historic Onancock property that serves as the organization’s headquarters.
Admission is $5 for Shore History members and $10 for nonmembers.
