Rayfield Answers Questions About Realtor License, Unnamed County Sources
Cape Charles, Va. — Nolan Rayfield, a candidate for Northampton County Treasurer, has responded to questions that several residents raised with the Cape Charles Mirror in recent weeks: whether he would keep his real estate license if elected, and who in county government he was referring to during a recent candidate debate.
Real estate license
Rayfield said he intends to keep his real estate license active but has stepped away from the business. “I have not shown or sold any properties since December 2025, and I do not plan to represent buyers or sellers if elected,” he said.
Unnamed county sources
During the debate, Rayfield said people in county government had told him some county money could be managed more effectively, including by earning more interest. Asked to identify them, he said they are current and retired county employees. He declined to name them, saying the conversations were private and he wanted to respect their privacy.
Rayfield said his concerns are also based on records he obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, which he said raised questions about whether county funds were earning as much interest as possible. He acknowledged that the county has since made improvements but said he believes further options deserve review. If elected, he said, he would examine those options to determine what would best benefit Northampton County.
Rayfield has also been attacked online by dubious individuals who seem histrionically concerned about his age and experience–those are legitimate concerns.
Mirror Opinion
No matter who wins November 3rd, the County will have a good person in the role. Each brings a different skill set, so folks will have to decide which priorities matter most.
Both candidates bring different things to the table, and both will be adequate in the role of treasurer. However, county residents have to ask themselves–is it time to shake things up and try something new, or embrace the status quo? Is it time for an actual homegrown local to be given a chance?
