Peeps Demystified is the title of the upcoming program offered by The Eastern Shore Bird Club at 7:30 on March 14 at the Hermitage, 23610 North St., Onancock. The program is free and open to the public.
In birder jargon, “peeps” is a collective term for the smallest shorebirds, but more than 30 species of shorebirds – small, medium,and big – pass through or breed on the Eastern Shore. Wildlife biologist Joelle Buffa will share the tips and secrets to identifying this frequently confusing species that she has gained from her years of working on coastal wildlife refuges in California and managing habitat in Utah near the Great Salt Lake.
Buffa and her husband, Clyde Morris, both of whom are retired from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, have conducted weekly shorebird surveys on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge since 2009.
