The Academy for Lifetime Learning is pleased to announce our 2026 scholarship winners. This year, we can award three $1500 scholarships, one for nursing and two general scholarships.
The recipient of the Betty Ross Scholarship for students going into nursing is Nandua High School graduate Campbell Bays. She said her interest in becoming a nurse began when she became a lifeguard. She said the experiences she had with that position and the training required, “helped me build confidence and skills that strengthened my desire to work in a field that allows me to help people every day.” Campbell will attend James Madison University.
Chris Lopez Perez, a Nandua High School graduate, was awarded a general scholarship. He will attend the University of Southern California to study human biology with plans to become a physician. “I aspire to become a physician who builds clinics where trust and affordability are treated as carefully as the treatment itself,” he wrote in an essay describing the difficulties of healthcare access in rural areas.
Ashley Austin is a recipient of our general scholarship. She is a graduate of Arcadia High School and will attend the University of Virginia, where she plans to study biomedical engineering. In her essay, she told a story of how repairing a broken leg on her doll led to an interest in biomedical engineering, “where I could combine specific engineering principles with biological science to create different inventions, including designed prosthetics for individuals with disabilities or medical image machines.”
The Academy for Lifetime Learning (A.L.L.) is an all-volunteer organization of individuals who share their interests and life experiences to provide a rich and varied menu of courses. All money collected from membership fees, except for a small amount used to pay the expenses of the organization, is given each year in scholarships to help Eastern Shore high school graduates continue their education.
